"Our interactions day to day helped to shape and prepare me and the team for our future... in addition, I have learned a lot about the environment and how to use it in a way that is self sustaining... I cannot think of a better way to spend the summer then helping out and giving back to the community."
"One of the most valuable opportunities HYCC offers corps members is the chance to see what natural resource professionals actually do in their jobs on a day to day basis. To be able to shadow them is an invaluable experience to those considering a career in conservation." Phil Metzger, Resource Conservation & Development Coordinator, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service

Headwaters Youth Conservation Corps 2011-2012:Be part of the big answer! What we do: Headwaters Youth Conservation Corps (HYCC) provides conservation services to communities in the Chenango and Upper Susquehanna River Watersheds. This service area includes all of Chenango and Otsego Counties and parts of Broome, Cortland, Madison, Oneida, Herkimer, Delaware and Schoharie Counties. Through extensive partnerships with local, state and national organizations, businesses and government agencies, HYCC offers a unique conservation service and learning experience for teens and young adults (ages 17 to 25). Our Vision: HYCC helps teens and young adults develop a sense of stewardship for the natural world through "hands on" conservation service projects. Through their service, participants make a positive contribution to the natural environment, community and the local economy. HYCC is also a mentoring and community building project that joins participants from disadvantaged and troubled backgrounds with adult volunteers and interested youth from the larger community. College credit now available! Both year round and summer corps members will serve in a variety of capacities ranging from working on hiking trails to assisting a nature center staff to helping make homes and buildings more energy efficient. In these cases, again, we attempt to place those corpsmembers onto crews nearby where ever they find housing (HYCC can assist with finding housing. The year round program: Service with a year round crew will include a strong educational component with technical training in a wide range of conservation related skills and disciplines. Corpsmembers will be exposed to conservation professionals from many disciplines and will have opportunities to explore multiple career options. The year round crew tends to focus on college exploration, GED preparation (if necessary) and shadowing natural resource professionals, along with participating in conservation related service projects. Service sites for year round corpsmembers tend to be local to Norwich NY and may include: the Rogers Environmental Education Center is Sherburne NY, The Norwich Family YMCA Camp near Plymouth, NY; The Place in Norwich NY and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County in Norwich NY. Generally, the year round component begins in mid to late October and continues on for the next 48 weeks. Each corpsmembers on the the year round crew MUST provide provide a minimum of 1700 hours of service. When the summer roles around, the year round corpsmembers become part of the summer crews...
